Gender and Economic Development

People Centered Development

What comes to mind when you hear the word development?

Usually, when we think of development we are imagining of bustling cities, buildings, computers, cars, etc. We are focusing too much on the physical assets. But there is another paradigm of what is development, it's the People Centered Perspective" or "People Centered Development". This perspective is an approach to international development that focuses on improving local communities’ self-reliance, social justice, and participatory decision-making. It recognizes that economic growth does not inherently contribute to human development and calls for changes in social, political, and environmental values and practices. This development is focused on empowering the people and it has concern for the basic needs of the people concerned.

Development Indicators of the People Centered Development

1. Employment

It means the people are productive they work efficiently.

2. Education and Training

It means the people are knowledgeable. They are civilized, enlightened, literate, numerate and informed.

3. Nutrition

People are well nourished. Eats enough food to survive.

4. Health

Physically capable to do fruitful works.

5.  Fertility

People are able to bear and rear children.

6. Migration

People travel in search for opportunities.

Difference of Sex and Gender

What do we mean by "sex" and "gender"?

Sometimes it is hard to understand exactly what is meant by the term "gender", and how it differs from the closely related term "sex".
"Sex" refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women.
"Gender" refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.
To put it another way:
"Male" and "female" are sex categories, while "masculine" and "feminine" are gender categories. Aspects of sex will not vary substantially between different human societies, while aspects of gender may vary greatly.
Some examples of sex characteristics:

  • Women menstruate while men do not
  • Men have testicles while women do not
  • Women have developed breasts that are usually capable of lactating, while men have not
  • Men generally have more massive bones than women

    Some examples of gender characteristics:
      •     In the United States (and most other countries), women earn significantly less money than men for similar work
      •     In Viet Nam, many more men than women smoke, as female smoking has not traditionally been considered appropriate
      •     In Saudi Arabia men are allowed to drive cars while women are not
      •     In most of the world, women do more housework than men

      Sex
      • Biological
      • Physical attribution
      • Body contour and feature
      • Hormones, chromosomes and reproductive organs
      Gender
      • Social (church, media, government, school)
      • Social construct
      • Society and social interactions
      • Shaped concept of being male or female

What is the role of women in economic development?

      1. To have participation in governance

Women could be shareholders, officials in academe and political leaders.

      2. Women should be helping other women

Women should eliminate crab mentality, they should seek to help other women, train them to be more skillful and knowledgeable. Women shouldn't be afraid of competition.

      3. Empowered women should empower others

Women should share their knowledge and experience, it may improve your knowledge.

      LGBT Discrimination

Anti- Discrimination Legislation in the Philippines

The Philippines Congress is currently debating groundbreaking legislation which, if passed, would firmly establish the protection of Filipinos against the discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in basic areas of life, such as employment, education, public accommodation and health services, as enshrined in international standards. A similar version of this bill was already passed in the Congress. However, while the House of Representatives passed the measure, it failed in the Senate. Now is the time for the House to uphold its previous decision for the Senate to commit itself to the principles of universal human rights outlined by treaties of which the Philippines is already a signatory.

      Discrimination in the Philippines

Members of the LGBT community in the Philippines continue to encounter discrimination in school, employment, public establishments and their own families. For example Mr. Rico a transgender who graduated as a Suma Cum Laude, is a professor in a university. But because of his sexual orientation and appearance, he was being discriminated by both his coworkers and students. Because of this, he was forced to resign and work as a showgirl in Japan. Mr. Rico could had been teaching, he would have taught many students and shared his knowledge but because of the eminent discrimination he resorted on being a showgirl.

      International Human Rights Law

Everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, is guaranteed the fullest enjoyment of their civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights under international law. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender individuals, like any other person, are all entitled to equality before the law. The U.N  Human Rights Committee has urged states not only to repeal laws criminalizing same-sexual conduct but also to enshrine prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation into their constitution or other fundamental laws.

The seminar about gender and development is very meaningful. Base from the article posted above, it seems that they learned a lot from the seminar. Just by reading this article, I have acquired a lot of knowledge like the difference between the word "sex" and "gender". Before reading this article, I thought that "sex" and "gender" have the same meaning, after all, I was wrong. Aside from learning the difference between "sex" and "gender", I also learned about discrimination especially the LGBT discrimination. I definitely agree to what the article says. Aside from the LGBT discrimination, I also appreciate the discussion on personal development. Yes it's true that personal development focus on empowering people and its concern is about the basic needs of the people concerned.

How I wish I was also given the opportunity to attend this kind of seminar. It seems that the seminar is effective and very enjoyable. I am hoping that next time, I can attend to this kind of seminar. Godbless and Gudnyt =)) (ammstar-macro-ammstar)

The blog entry is a great opportunity for us to open our minds about person centered development, and on how we could empower people and be aware of their basic needs. As students, as early as now, we should become conscious of the people around us and be mindful of our thoughts and actions towards them. Person centered development leads to a better economy so we should deal with it with importance, we should also be aware of the sexual orientation and gender identity of every person in the society so as to be fair and avoid the so called gender discrimination. We are also enlightened by the roles of women in the economic development such as participation on the governance, empowering and sharing knowledge to women and to other people.

Reading the blog entry lays interest on us because it dealt with issues that are in nowadays, and calls for a debate in our society.

The seminar should have been heard by everybody. It is a call for everyone to stop discriminating our friends that are part of the LGBT. It was a good and easy way to improve awareness among the people. Thus, increasing awareness may lead to social acceptance. The issue itself, in the opinion, does not need any debate. The bill that was mention, if on the positive outlook, must be pass. One of the considerations in passing this bill is to prove that no one should be deprived of his capacity to participate in the economic growth of the country. It will not only lessen social discrepancy but also will eventually affect our country economically. An alarming issue with regards to these discriminations is that, mostly, gays and the lesbians are not allowed to work decent professional jobs. Or in other cases, they are being the "topic of the talks" in organizations. Because of these, they are forced to leave the job they desire and resort to jobs that the society expects them to do. Nowadays, most of the LGBTs are in the entertainment industry. Nonetheless, LGBT, in their number now, will greatly affect the economy. Thus, social acceptance will positively affect the country.

In a society setting like ours, what we really need is the concept of people centered development where improvements always start on every individuals and then d society. It was also mentioned there the ways on how to attain development but one thing that made us confuse regarding the blog is how migration become an indicator of development. If people keep looking for job on other countries, labor force in our country will decrease. Aside from that the blog has mentioned the difference between and sex, which is very informative. Another thing that we like about blog is how they describe the role of women today. We are glad to know that people have abandoned their old days perception towards women. The blog has also brought up the gender discrimination in the society. The LGBT sector is the one being affected by this phenomenon and for that we can't see any reason for the senate to disapprove the law for the protection of the LGBT.

The blog entry is indeed an eye opener to everyone. It is a realization to us to become more aware to the issues occuring in our socity.

The seminar provides an opportunity to widen the perspective of the people about women and the LGBT sector. Historically speaking, there is a prevalent discrimination on women. The roles of women in those times are just for procreation purposes and they are not allowed to uphold political positions nor participate in election. During the Graeco -Roman civilization, women are not even sent to school rather they are at home devoting themselves to learn and do household chores. Gays and lesbian has the same story as they are suffering from massive discrimination to the point that they are being executed long time ago. Not until the 1920 where the jazz age and the famous feminist movement where women are seeking for gender equality and justice. Nowadays women are far from the stereotypical women who are just doing household chores. At present times women can do men’s task, and LGBT sector are lucrative and can excel especially in the field of arts and entertainment. This seminar provides an understanding that TALENTS,SKILLS, EFFICIENCY AND DOMINANCE DON’T RECIDE IN GENDER. In this new millennium that we are into it’s about time to widen our perspective that these creatures can do better than what we actually perceive and expect. They can be lucrative in their own way and we should be open and take away our prejudice on this people. Many women had prove their worth in the field were men in dominance one of which is Amelia Earheart, the female pilot becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. LGBT sector had also contributed notably the likes are Michael Jackson, Ellen Degeneres and Adam Lambert who made their contribution in the field of entertainment and music. THIS SEMINAR BOOSTS THE ADVOCACY FOR GENDER SENSITIVITY AND EQUALITY. We can say that it’s a seminar that is worth attending to.

due to unexpected events, we weren't able to post our comment for the past week. we would like to ask for consideration regarding this unexpected event.

nowadays, our surroundings have changed a lot. from our way of clothing, to our preferences and even in the way we treat other people. Gender Discrimination is now evident everywhere. from mass media even to the corner of every street in our place. what might cause this increasing problem is still unknown to many.

Many LGBT legal scholars argue that discrimination against gay, lesbian, and bisexual people is sex discrimination. Though some say that gay men and women are treated the same, and therefore are not discriminated against based on gender, these scholars disagree, and point out a fundamental misunderstanding.

Homophobia, a term used to refer to a range of negative attitudes and feelings towards lesbian and gay and in some cases bisexual, transgender people and behaviour although these are usually covered under biphobia and transphobia. Definitions refer variably to antipathy, contempt, prejudice, aversion, and irrational fear.Homophobia is observable in critical and hostile behavior such as discrimination and violence on the basis of a perceived homosexual or in some cases any non-heterosexual orientation.

a lot of people are still not in favor of such preference for gender. we could not do anything about that but all we could ask for is recpect.

each one of us was created by God uniquely and so we need to respect if not love this creation of God. they are human like us and they have feelings too. as a group we realized that these people who we think our "abnormal" contributes a lot in our society more than the "normal" people. this seminar though we are not able to attend open our minds to the reality that our world is cruel to people who they think are not one of their kind. RESPECT is what we need, RESPECT is what they deserve and RESPECT is what we need to give. let us allow them to experience the wonderful thing called LIFE without fear of discrimination and rejection from the society.
